Item/Description: Antique Chinese male foo dog with his paw on a ball. Early 20th century, Qing dynasty. Carved wood with lacquered red finish. These traditional guardians were common decorative and symbolic elements placed at the entrances of important structures to guard against dangerous spiritual elements and people. They symbolize protection in Buddhist and Chinese traditions. (Guardian Lion, Fu Lion, Buddhism, Asian)
